Sorigué Reaches the Final of Asefma’s ‘Best Environmental Practices’ Awards
During the 20th annual conference of the Spanish Association of Asphalt Mix Manufacturers (Asefma), Sorigué had the opportunity to present the impact of its reflective pavements in mitigating the urban heat island effect.
Sorigué was one of the seven finalists in the 12th edition of the "Best Environmental Practices" (MPA) Award in the field of manufacturing, paving, application, and transportation of asphalt mixes. The award was presented by the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Asphalt Mixtures (Asefma) during its 20th annual conference, held in Madrid on 4 and 5 November 2025.
The proposal, titled “Pilot Test with Reflective Pavements: Urban Solutions for Sustainable and Resilient Environments,” explains how cities can reduce the urban heat island effect by using pavements with high solar reflectance.
Alba Pallarés Giral, a technician from Sorigué’s Product Development Department, presented the research results to the audience. This work is being carried out by Sorigué’s Infrastructure and Materials division in collaboration with the MATCAR group (Construction Materials and Roads) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
The pilot tests confirmed the reflective capacity of certain bituminous mixes in reducing heat absorption and retention. The next step will be to measure these results in real-world urban settings. This blog post from Sorigué provides a detailed explanation of the project.
High-level competition
Other prominent companies and institutions in the sector also reached the final of Asefma’s “Best Environmental Practices” Award, including CHM Obras e Infraestructuras, Misturas, Eurovía España, Padecasa, Huesker, Eiffage Construcción (Spain), Eiffage Infrastructures (France), as well as academic institutions such as the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio.
During Asefma’s national conference, Sorigué also took part in the Young Paving Talent panel, an initiative by the association to bring young talent into the asphalt industry. In this session, Israel Martín, an asphalt worker from Sorigué’s Catalonia team, shared his experience at the company and expressed his commitment to promoting the sector as a viable educational and career path.
The audience – made up of materials experts, public administration officials, universities, and companies – discussed energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and digital transformation as key pillars for the future of sustainable roads. The event also included a session on the new Energy Savings Certificates, a topic on which Asefma receives advisory and training support from Emin Energy, a company within the Sorigué group.
Sustainable pavements and techniques
With 70 years of experience in the manufacturing and paving of bituminous mixes, Sorigué operates eight company-owned production plants, one mobile plant, and a cold recycling train.
The company is recognised in the materials sector as a pioneer in developing and applying sustainable techniques, such as in-situ pavement rehabilitation. This involves creating a homogeneous mix from the milled existing pavement material, bituminous emulsion, water, and – in some cases – additives like recycled plastic. This process, carried out at ambient temperature in a single operation, reduces CO₂ emissions by 45%.
Additionally, through its Calcel brand, Sorigué designs, manufactures, and distributes its own cold repair products, asphalt mixes, and permeable soils that are quick-drying.
