Sorigué Asphalts rehabilitates the surface of the C-45 road in Lleida with recycled asphalt
The solution applied by Sorigué was the cold recycling technique with the addition of a 7 cm modified emulsion to the existing bituminous mix. Additionally, a 5 cm semi-hot granulometry wearing course was laid. These techniques enabled the reuse of up to 100% of the existing asphalt in a single process.
The General Directorate of Mobility Infrastructures of the Generalitat de Catalunya entrusted Sorigué with the rehabilitation works of the C-45 road surface between PK 6+600 and PK 14+000. This interurban road, used for local and agricultural purposes, runs north-west through Lleida, connecting the A-2 and AP-2 motorways with the C-12 road.
These works were carried out in late 2023 over a 7,500-metre stretch of road using the cold recycling technique, utilizing the existing bituminous mix.
The works followed the guidelines set by the Department of Territory regarding the use of sustainable road surfaces, promoting the recycling of existing asphalt and innovating in the wearing course by incorporating materials also derived from recycling.
In-situ mixing and laying
The C-45 originates at the intersection with the C-12 in the urban area of Maials, in the province of Lleida, and extends to the border with Zaragoza. Of its 19,540 metres, Sorigué worked on a 7,500-metre stretch consisting of a single carriageway with two lanes, one for each direction.
The works began in the municipality of Seròs, past the intersection of the road leading to the Baix Segre mining operation, and ended after the bridge over the Segre River.
The proposed solution involved applying the cold recycling technique with a 7 cm modified emulsion added to the existing bituminous mix. Additionally, a 5 cm semi-hot granulometry wearing course was laid. These techniques enabled the reuse of up to 100% of the existing asphalt in a single process.
At ambient temperature and on-site, the aged road surface was rehabilitated using a homogeneous mix that included material from the milling of the existing pavement, bituminous emulsion, water, and, where necessary, additives. The result is a highly durable surface with a 45% reduction in CO₂-equivalent emissions and significant energy savings.
Sorigué, a pioneer in sustainable asphalting
A leader in the infrastructure and construction materials sector, Sorigué boasts seven decades of experience in the production and laying of all types of bituminous mixes and is a pioneer in developing and applying sustainable asphalting techniques. The company operates eight production plants, a mobile plant, and a cold recycling train, along with an updated fleet of machinery.
Among its most recent projects are the maintenance of 99 roads in the northern part of Girona province, the asphalting of the MotorLand Aragón speed circuit, the reinforcement of the A92G motorway surface in Granada, and the asphalting of the Barceloneta Promenade and Port Vell pavement in Barcelona.
