Sorigué Begins Construction of the First Platform for the Tarragona Tram, Catalonia

September 25, 2025

Sorigué is responsible for carrying out the first phase of this major project, building the platform between Cambrils centre and Vila-Seca university.

Tarragona is set to become the second Catalan province, after Barcelona, to have an electric tram service operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC). The new TramCamp aims to connect the cities of Reus and Tarragona via 46 kilometres of track with 47 stations.

This tram system is designed to improve urban and interurban mobility for 325,000 people, linking urban centres, hospitals, universities, and tourist areas.

Sorigué has begun executing the first phase of this major project by building the platform between Cambrils centre and Vila-Seca university. This section will make use of the former railway alignment between Salou and Cambrils, which was dismantled in 2020.

The works include building the subgrade, diverting affected utilities, and adapting structures along the current single-track coastal corridor that runs between Vandellòs and L’Hospitalet de l’Infant and the Salou Port Aventura ADIF station. From that point to the A7 motorway, the new alignment will run parallel to Joan Fuster and Pere Molas Avenues.

In addition to excavating more than 100,000 cubic meters of earth and 22,000 cubic meters of rock, the works require diverting numerous power lines, telephone lines, gas, water, and other utilities, as well as repairing and widening the bridges over the Regueral and Maspujol rivers and building another bridge to cross the new railway line.

The works will continue over the next two years, but it will not be until 2028 that the public will be able to use the 14 stops and three interchanges that will connect the tram to the regional trains along the Costa Daurada.

Sorigué in Tarragona

With a strong foothold in the province of Tarragona, Sorigué has its own offices for managing contracts across various business areas, as well as a quarry in the municipality of Alforja. From this open-pit mining operation, ballast is currently extracted for the improvement works on the C3 commuter rail line in Valencia, in the Buñol-Utiel section.

At these facilities, a construction waste recovery centre has also been established, certified by the Catalan Waste Agency, where old concrete sleepers from the Mediterranean Corridor are recycled into recycled aggregate. This product is then sold for reuse in the railway industry, supporting a circular economy process.

Meanwhile, through its City division, Sorigué handles the maintenance of trees, gardens, and associated pavements in the green areas of the city of Reus. Through its Water division, it manages wastewater treatment at the treatment plants in the municipalities of Torredembarra and Pla de Santa Maria.
