Plaza Nuestra Señora de los Dolores in the municipality of Camas, Seville, has regained its vitality and become established as a local meeting point thanks to a comprehensive renovation focused on people’s wellbeing.

Sorigué’s work has successfully redefined the square as a safe, comfortable, and pedestrian-friendly space, helping to revitalise its social uses without losing sight of the area’s historical and cultural identity.

Accessible and uniform pedestrian crossings, new flowerbeds, illuminated benches, wider pavements, and natural climate shelters are among the standout features.

Plaza Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is one of the most important spaces in Camas, as it brings together the Town Hall, the Carlos Álvarez Novoa Theatre, the Rafael Alberti Library, and the Police Station.

As a mandatory thoroughfare, the paving had deteriorated badly and its green spaces were inadequate.

The comprehensive renovation undertaken by Sorigué prioritises pedestrian movement over vehicular traffic with several specific measures:

  • Creation of a uniform paved platform.
  • Improved accessibility.
  • Expansion of seating and recreation areas.
  • Installation of new street furniture elements, such as granite benches, landscaping, and lighting.
  • Planting of low-level trees to create climate shelters.
  • Installation of a dry deck fountain near the main entrance to the Town Hall.

The paving chosen for this project is a granite composition sourced from a single quarry so that, despite taking on different shades and shapes, it ensures maximum uniformity in the design.

In the small square next to the car park, a special paving has been installed featuring granite setts typical of the region mixed with Portuguese limestone, while the children’s playground incorporates dry earthen paving to provide a natural feel.

Shaded areas have been achieved by planting tree pits parallel to the existing ones, creating a pedestrian ‘street’ with benches.

Citizens can also enjoy new trees, wider pavements, and benches in the northern sector, bordered by Isaías Martín and Mariana de Pineda streets.

Added to these works is the single-level pedestrian platform installed in Plaza de la Constitución, very close to Plaza Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.
