Reinforcement of the roof of the waste pit at the Sant Adrià de Besòs energy recovery plant

Reinforcement of the roof of the waste pit at the Sant Adrià de Besòs energy recovery plant

The project consists of the complete structural reinforcement of the roof of the waste pit of an energy recovery plant which, due to its proximity to the sea, was seriously damaged by the salinity of the environment and the passage of time.

Client:
Tractament i Selecció de Residus, S.A. (Tersa)
Location:
Barcelona
Period:
September 2019 – February 2020
Type of service:
Industrial supplies and assemblies
Budget:
€412,029.67 (excluding VAT)
Two metal structures have been mounted at each end with three fastening points per beam in order to improve the service life of the waste pit cover. To place them in their final position, the 30-metre-long metal trusses have to be hoisted simultaneously by two 120-tonne cranes in a high-precision operation.

The reinforced concrete pillars supporting the beams have also been repaired due to their serious structural problems as, in addition to supporting the beams, these 1.20 m x 0.80 cm pillars must also

support part of the weight of the trusses. To achieve this, its perimeter has been increased by 8 cm using structural mortar and additional reinforcement.

The surfaces of both the trusses and the pillars have been treated with special paints to cope with marine salinity.

Finally, the roof has been waterproofed to prevent water seepage.
