On 25 February 2026, an institutional visit was made to the winning pilot projects of the “Ciutat Proactiva 2024 – Drought Mission” programme, an initiative by BIT Habitat, Barcelona’s urban innovation agency, which promotes innovative solutions to optimise the comprehensive management of the water cycle and tackle the current drought emergency. 

The event provided an opportunity to explore first-hand various projects selected in this call, including the RegCOM prototype, developed by Sorigué through its Urban Spaces North division, in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Societat Orgànica and Naturalea. 

The visit was attended by the teams driving the programme and the project’s monitoring committee, with representatives from institutions such as Barcelona Activa, Parcs i Jardins, BCASA Cicle de l’Aigua and the Climate Change Office, as well as the press and specialists from the scientific and university fields. 

During the tour, other pilot projects selected under the call were presented. These included REGALIM, promoted by UPC, Tarpuna and FEGiCAT; RegeNET, developed by the Universitat de Barcelona; Comunitats de Sembra d’Aigua, promoted by l’Associació Germanetes Jardins d’Emma, l’Associació Taula de l’Eix Pere IV, l’Associació LEMUR, Fundació Privada Elisava and Viver Tres Turons; MICA, led by MICA Eco; and SwiftOn, promoted by SWIFTON Innoveering. 

Regenerating water from the community: RegCOM 

RegCOM is an innovative, nature-based solution for water regeneration and conservation. It is a greywater phytodepuration system that enables the implementation and testing of modules on the communal terraces of existing buildings.

These installations use plants to purify domestic wastewater from showers, sinks or dishwashers, while simultaneously promoting the renaturalisation of shared spaces. In addition to regenerating water, RegCOM helps reduce the urban heat island effect, promotes biodiversity and improves the urban landscape. 

One of the key elements of the project is citizen engagement. Neighbourhood communities actively participate in the installation of the modules and receive training on water usage and conservation habits, with the aim of reducing the volume discharged into the sewerage network. The kits used are lightweight, prefabricated, adaptable and scalable, and can be combined with other renaturalisation and water efficiency solutions. 

RegCOM joins other innovative and sustainable projects by Sorigué’s Urban Spaces North division . Notable among these is Regenerar Barcelona, a self-supporting wooden structure adaptable to building façades that expands spaces, improves energy efficiency and incorporates environmental solutions such as green roofs and rainwater harvesting systems. 

Ciutat Proactiva 2024 – Drought Mission 

The Ciutat Proactiva 2024 – Drought Mission initiative, promoted by BIT Habitat in collaboration with BCASA and the Climate Change and Sustainability Office, emerged in a context marked by the intensification and prolongation of drought episodes in the Mediterranean region as a consequence of climate change. 

The programme calls upon Barcelona’s innovation ecosystem to rethink the relationship between the city, its citizens and water, promoting solutions that foster conservation, reuse and greater social awareness. The ultimate goal is to improve the comprehensive and sustainable management of the water cycle and contribute to a better quality of urban life.
