From 3 to 5 June, Sorigué’s Water, Industry and Innovation teams participated in DAQUAS 2026, one of the leading events for professionals, researchers and companies linked to the water sector. 

Recovering value from nitrogen in wastewater 

As part of the congress, Sorigué presented two innovative solutions that have been included in the congress’s digital book of proceedings. 

On the one hand, it presented the project “Nitrogen recovery in WWTPs by stripping: the first full-scale plant in Spain”, an innovative initiative that highlights the potential of the circular economy applied to the integrated water cycle. The presentation was given by Andreu Iglesias, Director of Engineering, Operation and Maintenance at Sorigué; Eduard Moliné, Head of the Operation, Maintenance and Biomethane group; Daniel Martín, Commercial Manager for Water and Industry; and Ignacio Palacios, Head of Water Production. 

The project enables the recovery of nitrogen present in wastewater for subsequent use as fertiliser, helping to optimise resources and reduce the environmental impact of purification processes. 

Microorganisms for water purification 

On the other hand, it also presented the BIODAPH project, a technology that uses microorganisms in wastewater purification to improve water quality and reduce its environmental impact. The presentation was delivered by Zulema Borjas, R&D&I Project Manager at Sorigué, alongside researchers from the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Vic, IDAEA-CSIC and the University of Girona. 

The system is based on the use of small crustaceans, such as water fleas, and microorganisms like microalgae, which absorb pollutants as a food source. The aim is to move towards more efficient wastewater treatment and reuse, committing to solutions with a low environmental impact that are based on natural biological processes. 

A leading forum for the water sector 

The event, organised by the Spanish Association of Urban Water, brought together the sector’s main professionals and entities to address the challenges and opportunities of the integrated water cycle through more than a hundred presentations, round tables and sessions. 

The President of Canal de Isabel II, Carlos Novillo; the President of DAQUAS, Jesús Maza; and the Secretary of State for the Environment of MITECO, Hugo Morán, led the opening ceremony of this event, which was held at the IFEMA Municipal Palace in Madrid.
