From 2026 and for the next three years, Sorigué is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the WWTPs and WWPSs serving the Campiña Sur region in the province of Badajoz, under a contract with the Promedio environmental management consortium of the Badajoz Provincial Council. 

“This action marks a milestone for the company because it is the first time we have entered Badajoz with wastewater treatment, and it is a great satisfaction for us to serve the population of Extremadura,” says Andreu Iglesias, Sorigué’s Director of Water and Biomethane Engineering. 

With the comprehensive management of 21 wastewater treatment plants and 5 pumping stations, Sorigué serves a population of 155,800 people distributed across the municipalities of Ahillones, Berlanga, Bienvenida, Campillo, Casas de Reina, Fuente de Cantos, Granja de Torrehermosa, Hornachos, Llera, Llerena, Maguilla, Ribera de Fresno, Usagre, Valencia de las Torres, Zafra, Puebla del Maestre, and Reina. As well as the districts of La Cardenchosa, Pallarés, Malcocinado, and El Raposo. 

Geographically dispersed and with flow rates ranging from 50 to 8,000 m³/day, these stations receive a total flow of 37,000 m³/day, equivalent to 15 Olympic-size swimming pools. 

In all of them, Sorigué deploys a specialised team to detect and correct deficiencies, operate the purification processes, carry out maintenance, analytical control, sludge and waste management, and the conservation of infrastructure and equipment.  

Sludge digester in Zafra 

One of the strategic actions is focused on the Zafra WWTP, with the design and installation of a sludge digester. The project is divided into two stages: the assembly of the digester itself, and the incorporation of a cogeneration engine to harness the biogas for the self-supply of electricity to the wastewater treatment plant. 

In this regard, Sorigué brings over twelve years of experience in the treatment of sludge generated in wastewater treatment plants for its transformation into biogas. The process consists of depositing the sludge in an anaerobic digester, whose fermentation allows for energy recovery in the form of biogas, which is then transformed into electricity. 

Sorigué in Extremadura 

Sorigué’s presence in the autonomous community of Extremadura is not only limited to the province of Badajoz. Over the past year, and also for the first time, the company has ventured into the city of Cáceres, carrying out renovation works on the drinking water supply network and sewerage systems. 

With this contract, awarded by Canal de Isabel II, the company has deployed all its experience in the modernisation of hydraulic installations and domestic connections for key points in the old town, residential neighbourhoods, and commercial hubs.
