The Ascó-Vandellós II Nuclear Association (ANAV) has renewed Sorigué’s certification as a service provider for the Ascó and Vandellós II nuclear power plants, located in Tarragona, Catalonia. 

This certification, which is renewed every three years, validates the group’s technical capacity to carry out highly specialised work in three areas: electrical maintenance support, underwater works and testing of HVAC systems (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). 

The latter is not currently a service provided by Sorigué, but the ANAV certification guarantees its suitability to do so. 

Energy supply 

Endesa Generació and Iberdrola Generación Nuclear are the two companies that make up ANAV, whose nuclear reactors supply approximately 50% of the electricity consumed in Catalonia and 9% of the national total. 

Given that it operates with enriched uranium dioxide, ANAV complies with high international quality standards and is subject to the controls of the Nuclear Safety Council, so its suppliers must meet strict regulatory requirements.  
 

Electrical maintenance 
Since January 2017, Sorigué has been responsible for maintaining electrical systems, components and elements at the two power plants. A team of 109 professionals supports the preventive maintenance staff in daily work that requires a high commitment to safety. 

Precisely due to its Nuclear Safety Culture, Sorigué has received the ANAV Awards for the collaborating companies with the best health and safety performance in 2021 and 2024. 

Underwater works 

Sorigué also carries out underwater works at both power plants with a team of between 8 and 13 people, ready to respond to ad hoc demands and planned works. 

In Ascó, they inspect the cooling towers, clean the bottom of the storage basin and the intake and discharge channel of the river Ebro, among other tasks. In Vandellós II, the works include cleaning grates, inspecting water intake towers, reviewing the floating beacon system and supporting the assembly of floodgates, among other functions. 

Finally, during technical shutdowns for refuelling, in which the uranium rods are replaced, Sorigué’s electrical and underwater maintenance teams plan their interventions in detail and coordinate with other work units within the plants.
