Sorigué and the Tarragona City Council Present the Maintenance and Cleaning Service for the City’s Green Areas
With 76 specialised staff members, electric machinery, and vehicles, the new contract introduces improvements such as reinforced weekend shifts, remote incident management, and direct communication with residents through a mobile application.
Sorigué has been awarded the full contract for the maintenance, conservation, and cleaning of green spaces in the city of Tarragona, the capital of the province of the same name, which has a population of just over 141,000 residents.
The city’s mayor, Rubén Viñuales; the Councilor for Public Space, Guillermo García de Castro; Sorigué’s Director of Green Infrastructure, Francesc Faus; and the service’s lead technician, Ander Benaiges, presented the key updates to the current contract during a press conference held at Sorigué’s facilities in Tarragona.
Viñuales emphasised that “this contract brings gains in efficiency, professionalism, transparency, and optimised results,” and stressed that the service directly contributes to “improving the quality and dignity of public spaces.”
Francesc Faus also highlighted “the city’s strong commitment to green infrastructure to improve residents’ quality of life and combat climate change. That’s why we’re truly excited to be part of this project.”
The current contract took effect in June 2025. During the first five months, an emergency action plan was launched to restore planters and street furniture damaged by vandalism or misuse. Over the next four years, the plan includes annual pruning and the planting of up to 350 new trees each year, along with the improvement and redesign of 4,000 m² of shrub and flower beds and 2,000 m² of lawns.
Professional reinforcement
The relationship between the city of Tarragona and the Sorigué group, through its subsidiary Ambitec, dates back to 2012 with the first award of the parks and gardens maintenance contract, which has been renewed periodically ever since.
The service now has 76 staff members – five more than in the previous period – along with electric machinery and eight new vehicles (also electric or gas-powered) that help reduce the carbon footprint.
A major improvement is the reinforcement of service during weekends and holidays, as well as the addition of new professional roles: a specialist in arboriculture, an integrated pest manager, and two staff members permanently assigned to the “Pam a Pam” programme for intensive neighbourhood cleaning.
In the neighbourhoods of Sant Salvador and Santa Isabel in particular, Sorigué has hired five workers with mental health conditions who are members of the Aurora Association.
“The awarded contract clearly prioritises inclusion, sustainability, digitalisation, and transparency – and above all, improving people’s quality of life and health,” said Francesc Faus.
Modernised management
Another key strength of the new contract is the upgrade and modernisation of up to 3,250 meters of the city’s existing irrigation network, along with the introduction of remote incident management. Starting in the first quarter of 2026, the service will have real-time access to data on vulnerabilities in the urban forest and green areas, allowing better decisions on where to allocate resources and effort.
Finally, communication with residents will be much more direct thanks to a mobile app that will centralise all information about the city’s botanical heritage and provide details on ongoing work.
Thanks to its extensive experience in green infrastructure, Sorigué can guarantee the health of plant species, the proper condition of irrigation networks, ornamental fountains and drinking water features, the quality of planters, and the maintenance of non-landscaped areas within green spaces – such as decomposed granite, soil, cobblestone, or similar surfaces.
