Sorigué completes construction of section three of Barcelona Metro Line 9
The Infrastructure and Materials division of the business group has completed the tunnel section that runs between Zona Universitària and the future Mandri station on this line.
After two years of work, Sorigué has finished the execution of 3.9 kilometres of underground tunnel corresponding to section three of the future Barcelona Metro Line 9, between Zona Universitària and the upcoming Mandri station.
The complex civil works have been carried out under a joint venture (UTE) with Dragados, Acciona and Comsa, for Infraestructures.cat, a public company of the Generalitat de Catalunya, for an amount of €95 million.
The underground tunnel has been constructed by Sorigué’s Infrastructure team using a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 12 metres, which has enabled the installation of rings made of prefabricated concrete segments with a thickness of 40 cm.
The segments have been manufactured and supplied by the group’s Materials division from its factory in La Plana del Corb, Balaguer, Lleida. Over these two years, the company has built 1,191 segment rings that now line this section of the metro.
To execute the tunnel, excavation was carried out in open mode for subsoil materials of a granitic nature, which accounted for approximately 87%, while the remainder of the excavation, composed of slate, was carried out in closed EPB mode.
Infrastructure at Sorigué
Sorigué is a business group with 70 years of experience that, throughout its history, has participated in the construction of other major infrastructures.
In 2024, the company has been awarded the expansion of the A-7 motorway between Crevillente and Orihuela (Alicante); the construction of section II of the new rail access to the southern dock of the Port of Castellón; the urban development of the Spanish Army Logistics Base in Córdoba; and the execution of road access to the southern area of the Port of Barcelona, among other projects.
For its part, through its Materials division, Sorigué has been manufacturing segments for tunnel lining for more than 20 years. Segments are large precast concrete elements which, once assembled, form the rings that line tunnels.
Over these decades, the group has produced more than 600,000 pieces of different diameters.
Among the latest projects in which Sorigué has supplied segments are the construction of the new access to the Barcelona Airport terminal for the commuter rail network, as well as the initial 10 km section of Barcelona Metro Line 9, and the extension of the Sabadell line of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat, among other projects.
