The development of new road and rail access routes to improve connectivity in Barcelona’s Zona Franca is starting to become a reality. Sorigué has begun construction on the first section of the future railway ring that will connect the Port of Barcelona with a new southern access, driven by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. 

This project focuses on the southern end of the Nou Llobregat terminal A and B complex, running from the head of terminal B to its connection with the Prat wharf and the start of the future branch line connecting to the southern dock. 

First step in the master plan 

The start of the works marks a milestone within the Port of Barcelona’s large-scale interconnectivity project, which over the next ten years will roll out various infrastructure projects to boost the southern access to the province and streamline the movement of goods. 

The Urban Master Plan (PDU) for the Railway Terminal Areas of the Port of Barcelona is structured around two main axes: one exclusively for road transport and another combining road and rail projects.  

The road axis seeks to increase the capacity of the A-2 motorway to absorb more heavy traffic and expand links with Barcelona’s Zona Franca. Meanwhile, the rail axis outlines the creation of a ring intended for the future freight railway to be developed by the Port of Barcelona in El Prat de Llobregat. 

Sorigué’s work, through its companies Acsa and Trade, falls under this latter axis and consists of building the track superstructure for terminal B and an adjacent service road, as well as installing drainage systems for the road and railway platform. 

With an extensive track record in infrastructure, Sorigué is currently carrying out two major railway projects: on the one hand, building section II of the access to the southern basin of the Port of Castellón, connected to the Mediterranean Corridor; and on the other, the first phase of the Tarragona railway, via the construction of a platform linking central Cambrils with Vila-seca university.
