Sorigué solidifies expertise in biogas production from sludge treatment

March 7, 2025

The Vallès Oriental waste treatment facility, Aigües de Barcelona, and the Consorci Besòs Tordera have granted Sorigué contracts totalling over €6 million.

With deep expertise in the water cycle, Sorigué specializes in processing sludge from wastewater treatment plants to produce biogas.

Utilizing this know-how, the company is executing significant projects in Catalonia worth €5.6 million. Firstly, the Consorci per a la Gestió dels Residus del Vallès Oriental (Consortium for Waste Management in Vallès Oriental) has tasked Sorigué with installing new digesters to boost biogas production. Secondly, the Consorci Besòs Tordera has contracted the installation of an anaerobic digester and a biogas cogeneration engine for electricity generation at the Castellar del Vallès and Sant Celoni wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Lastly, Aigües de Barcelona has awarded a contract for constructing a sludge reception and rehydration system at the Prat de Llobregat WWTP.

Additionally, Sorigué has renewed its agreement with the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) for thermal sludge drying at the Rubí WWTP, a €15 million contract that encompasses plant operation and the sale of generated energy.

Vallès Oriental Waste Treatment Facility

This project aims to expand the Vallès Oriental waste treatment plant’s capacity to 80,000 tons/year of organic matter in its first phase, increasing to 100,000 tons/year in the second.

The work involves installing two new 3,750 m³ digesters to replace the existing 3,000 m³ units, constructing a 1,000 m³ organic suspension buffer tank to supply the new digesters, and adding a 700 m³ process water tank.

Funded by Next Generation funds, the project includes engineering design, supply, assembly, and testing of the new digesters and process tanks, along with dismantling the current process water tank.

Castellar del Vallès and Sant Celoni WWTP

Currently, sludge from the Castellar del Vallès and Sant Celoni wastewater treatment plants is dehydrated without further utilization. The new facilities will enable anaerobic digestion of the sludge, converting organic matter into biogas, which will be transformed into electricity to power the WWTPs.

The project includes installing two 1,500 m³ mesophilic anaerobic digesters, two biogas motogenerators (80 kW and 50 kW) with potential hydrogen integration, and auxiliary equipment for sludge pumping, heat exchange, and electrical and control systems.

These contracts, awarded by Consorci Besòs Tordera, are part of the recovery, transformation, and resilience plan, supported by Next Generation funds.

Prat de Llobregat WWTP

This €1.2 million contract from Aigües de Barcelona involves building and installing two platforms for receiving and rehydrating dehydrated sludge, a buffer tank, two new pumping systems, and a deodorization system.

By centralizing sludge management from multiple treatment plants, these platforms improve treatment efficiency and energy recovery. Accordingly, this project will also enable processing of dehydrated sludge from the Besòs WWTP.

Rubí WWTP

The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) has extended Sorigué’s contract for the operation and maintenance of the efficient thermal sludge treatment plant at the Rubí wastewater treatment plant, a role the company has fulfilled since 2017.

This facility processes and re-purposes about 23,000 tons/year of sludge. The engines that conduct the process use natural gas as fuel while producing electricity for self-consumption and export.

The €7 million contract, awarded for an initial two-year period, includes plant operation and energy sales.

Sorigué’s Strategic focus

These initiatives complement the Noguera Renovables project, undertaken with Axpo Iberia and the Torre Santa María farm. This facility processes 250,000 tons of livestock waste annually to produce biomethane, with Sorigué leveraging its expertise in organic waste processing for energy generation.

Sorigué’s prominence in the sector strengthens its strategic emphasis on sludge treatment and biogas production within its Water and Industry divisions, affirming the group’s proficiency in comprehensive hydraulic infrastructure maintenance and energy recovery.
