The La Pava area is the main pedestrian link between the Mediterranean municipalities of Castelldefels and Gavà. Faced with the need to replace the old metal footbridge, the Government of Catalonia’s Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition sought a solution to improve connectivity and pedestrian mobility in safe conditions. 

The new footbridge features a precast prestressed concrete main beam, with a 32-metre span and a width of 3 metres, resting on two reinforced concrete pillars located on either side of the C-31 road. 

One of the major challenges of the project involved closing the road to night-time traffic to position the structure’s main beam in situ. Weighing 110 tonnes, it required the use of high-capacity cranes. 

The public was able to use the old metal footbridge throughout all phases of the works and, once it was removed from the area, the ramps and stairs were retained to be incorporated into the new concrete structure. 

The prestressed concrete of the new footbridge has ensured, among other advantages:
