Renewal and adaptation of pavements and pedestrian pathways, reorganisation of intersections, and removal of architectural barriers in the districts of Hortaleza, Ciudad Lineal, San Blas-Canillejas, and Barajas.

These works enhance citizens’ comfort by adapting public roads and pathways to current regulations on accessibility, functionality, and mobility. 

Among the actions included are: 

  • Demolition and replacement of paving.
  • Reorganisation and widening of pavements, curb extensions, and pedestrian crossings. 
  • Adaptation of stairs, ramps, and containment elements.
  • Planting of various plant species. 
  • Installation of street furniture and playground equipment. 
  • Signage and resurfacing of roadways. 

The materials used have been key in measuring the environmental benefits of the intervention: 

  • Photocatalytic pavements reduce the urban heat island effect and improve air quality.
  • The bitumens in the bituminous mixes used for paving were manufactured with recycled tire rubber. 
  • Recycled aggregates were used in the concrete elements. 
  • Recycled materials from construction and demolition waste were also incorporated into the granular sub-base layers  
  • Public lighting has been replaced with low-energy LED lights.

Technical data

Sustainable materials 

  • Photocatalytic pavements with air purification performance (NOx) of Class 3 according to UNE 127197-1 standard or equivalent. 
  • Bitumens containing recycled rubber from end-of-life tires (minimum 0.3% by weight) in bituminous mixes for paving. 
  • Coarse recycled aggregates from crushed concrete waste, with a recycled coarse aggregate content of 20% by weight relative to the total coarse aggregate content. 

District: Ciudad Lineal, Calle Misterios 

  • Approximate surface area: 7,400 m² 
  • Multi-coloured cobblestone pedestrian platform with aligned trees and landscaped unpaved areas.  
  • New public lighting network. 
  • Installation of wooden benches. 
  • Children’s games painted on the pavement. 

District: Hortaleza, Avenida Madroños 

  • Approximate surface area: 3,800 m² 
  • Construction of infrastructure for the undergrounding of overhead telephone lines. 
  • New lighting network. 
  • Protection and signage of school zones. 
  • Pavement remodeling.
