Resurfacing of Plaza Mayor, Coslada, Madrid

Redevelopment of Plaza Mayor in Coslada, improving accessibility and replacing the pavement with photocatalytic solutions.

Client:
Coslada Municipal Government
Location:
Madrid
Period:
Ten months (2024)
Type of service:

Plaza Mayor in Coslada was inaugurated in 1987 and needed a remodel to better integrate its various urban elements and improve access from all entrances. This intervention addressed those needs and made it possible to replace the entire existing pavement.

The works coincided with waterproofing works on the garage roof beneath the plaza, carried out by the owners’ association under a private contract.

The project stands out for its sustainability in several ways. First, photocatalytic pavements were used, which help improve air quality and keep surfaces much cleaner. On another front, the slopes next to the new storm drains enhance rainwater surface drainage, and the ramps promote pedestrian mobility.

Special attention also goes to the playful elements that encourage outdoor activities, reducing the need for enclosed spaces that consume a lot of energy.

Among the actions carried out are:

  • Removal of loose steps and uneven levels.
  • Redistribution of plaza spaces to accommodate all kinds of uses.
  • Installation of prefabricated photocatalytic slabs.
  • Creation of new access ramps.
  • Renewal of the stormwater drainage network.
  • Improvement of public lighting.
  • Construction of a concrete slab for future pergolas that will provide shade.
  • Waterproofing of the garage roof.
  • Construction of a stage.
  • Installation of street furniture.
