Sorigué and GBI Paprec reach a purchase agreement for the environmental services company CLD

July 31, 2023

CLD is one of the main environmental operators in Catalonia, with more than 90 years of dedication to the management of urban and industrial waste. The company, which has been part of Sorigué since 2016, is currently responsible for street cleaning in three districts of Barcelona, has contracts in several municipalities across Catalonia and has a workforce of more than one thousand people.

Sorigué and GBI Paprec have reached a purchase agreement for the environmental services company CLD. The company is one of the main waste management operators in Catalonia, with more than 90 years of dedication to the management of urban services. It has been part of Sorigué since 2016.

CLD has undergone significant growth and invested heavily in new machinery and more sustainable vehicles, as well as improving its facilities with a new photovoltaic self-supply park within the framework of the waste collection and street cleaning contract in Barcelona, where it manages three districts in the western part of the city and serves more than 400,000 inhabitants.

It also has important waste management contracts with local councils throughout Catalonia. CLD has a strong presence in the provinces of Barcelona, Lleida and Tarragona. It also started up a waste recovery plant in Barberà del Vallés in 2023, expanding its portfolio of services in the sector.

With this agreement, GBI Paprec now has a strong presence throughout Catalonia and in the relevant collection and cleaning contract in Barcelona, through the management of the western area of the city, which includes 3 districts (Sants-Montjuic, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Les Corts) and serves 400,000 people.

Sorigué has chosen GBI Paprec because it is a company that knows the waste management market, and this ensures the continuity of its services and the company’s team.

Sorigué has counted on JB Capital as advisor and coordinator for the process.

Sorigué focuses on water, energy and urban infrastructures

In its strategy for the coming years, the Sorigué business group has decided to disinvest in waste management and has opted to boost its activities in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors, as well as to strengthen its position in the water cycle and urban infrastructures.
Along this path, Sorigué has made new investments in the water cycle with the purchase of the company Lasaosa. Acquired last March, this company located in the province of Huesca specialises in the sale and installation of products and the maintenance of hydraulic infrastructures in the field of chlorination and chemical disinfection. It currently has more than 600 clients, including public and private organisations.

In addition, the group has added three new companies linked to construction materials to its portfolio this year: Hormigones la Paz, Asfaltos Hormigones Teruel and Jiloca. The purchase of these three companies located in the province of Teruel aims to consolidate the group’s presence in Aragon.

The group maintained stable growth in 2022 and closed its financial year with consolidated sales of 740 million euros, which represent a growth of 13%. Its EBITDA reached 34 million euros, similar to the 34.8 million euros in 2021.

In turn, its business portfolio amounted to 1.3 billion euros in 2022, while the group’s own funds represent 40% of the 2022 balance sheet, thus confirming its stability and solvency.
Paprec continues its expansion in Spain

Since its creation in Spain in 2021, Paprec has acquired five companies with the aim of becoming a key player in recycling and energy recovery. CLD would be the sixth company to join the group.

The Paprec Group had a turnover of more than 2.5 billion euros in 2022. It has won several tenders this year in Spain for waste collection, waste management and cleaning, and now employs more than 600 people.

It had a target of reaching 100 million euros for 2023, but it will now exceed this figure with CLD.

To date, it is present in Catalonia, Andalusia, the Basque Country, Valencia and Madrid and is looking to expand throughout Spain.

Paprec was assisted by E&Y and Cuatrecasas.
