Sorigué supplies the ballast for the construction of a section of the Mediterranean Corridor

July 18, 2019

The company, together with two other companies in a temporary joint venture, supplies more than 240 thousand tonnes of this specific aggregate for high-performance rail lines.

Throughout 2019, Sorigué, through its subsidiary Cuarcitas del Mediterráneo, is supplying 241,800 tonnes of ballast for the execution of the Castellbisbal-Vilaseca section of the Mediterranean Corridor railway, together with the company J. Riera and Canteras La Ponderosa.

The contract, signed with ADIF, includes the extraction of the stone for manufacturing the ballast; the temporary storage of the aggregate in the quarry; carrying the ballast to the stockpile area; transporting the ballast to the loading area; formation, conservation and custody of the stored ballast; final loading into a hopper train; the expenses derived from the use and maintenance of the stockpile areas; and finally, if necessary, washing the ballast.

As part of the contract, the land destined for stockpiling the material has been installed with a scale for weighing the ballast. The operations for loading the hopper trains with material, and its subsequent distribution over the track, is being carried out overnight so as not to interfere with normal train traffic.

Porphyritic ballast is an optimal aggregate for the construction of both high-speed rail networks and conventional rail networks. The ballast produced by Sorigué at its quarry in Alforja, Tarragona, bears the ADIF quality seal, which allows the company to be a ballast supplier for any provision requested by the railway infrastructure entity. This seal guarantees both the quality of the ballast and the processes involved in its production.

The execution of the Mediterranean Corridor, which will allow trains with standard European gauge to circulate, will reduce travel times, attract new investments to the country by improving connectivity with the centre of Europe, bolster exports, develop the logistics sector and help reduce energy consumption.
