Sorigué manufactures materials for the new Almudévar reservoir

April 9, 2019

At its gravel pit in Zuera, Huesca, the Group produces more than 900,000 tons of gravel and 55,000 m3 of concrete that will constitute the filter, drain and spillways for the new Almudévar reservoir, one of the largest hydraulic works currently under way in Spain.

The Sorigué Group, through its company Vialex, has been awarded the production of the materials that will constitute the filter, drain and spillways for the new Almudévar reservoir, in Huesca. Specifically, the company will produce 900,000 tons of selected gravel and 55,000 m3 of concrete at its gravel pit in Zuera, located 20 km from the reservoir. Production of the material began in March 2019 and the project is due to last 32 months.

The reservoir, one of the largest hydraulic works currently under way in Spain, is being built by the temporary joint venture comprising Sacyr, Sogeosa, Vias and Isolux for the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation. Total investment in the work comes to EUR 85 million.

The new infrastructure will be crucial for the Upper Aragon irrigation system and key to boosting agriculture in the province of Huesca. The project is part of the regulation of the River Gállego and will help to enhance the hydraulic safety of this valley, as it will mitigate flooding and increase reserves for the supply of the area.

Investments in Zuera
Given the specific nature of the two materials in production, Sorigué has made a series of investments in its facilities in Zuera: a new aggregate mixing plant has been set up to adjust the final grain size of products and amendments have been made to the current plant to improve the production processes of the raw materials that comprise the filter and drain, in addition to other improvements.

The chimney drain is located in the body of the dams and its purpose is to drain the flow that filters through them. In turn, the water filter, which is connected to the chimney drain, is designed to prevent material from being dragged, in other words, to prevent fine particles in the body of the dams being transported towards the chimney drain.

Sorigué has been present in the region of Aragon since the 1970s. The Group has offices in Zaragoza and Huesca, and it has aggregate quarries and asphalt and concrete facilities. Currently, the Group has contracts in place in the field of asphalt works, road conservation and construction projects, in particular civil engineering.
