Sorigué participates in the renovation of Barcelona’s Avinguda Meridiana

June 4, 2025

The municipal macro-project covers a total area of 74,815 m², of which 24,539 m² are transformed through Sorigué’s intervention. The renovation aims to extend the central bidirectional bike lane from Les Glòries park and provide the area with more pedestrian spaces.

Historically dedicated to cars as one of Barcelona’s key arteries, Avinguda Meridiana is being completely renewed to become a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly space, as well as supportive of public transportation.

The works, which began in April 2025 and will continue until October 2026, cover a total area of 74,815 m², spanning from Carrer Felipe II to Passeig Fabra i Puig.

Sorigué, through its company Acsa, is working on the section between Carrer Garcilaso and Carrer Cardenal Tedeschini - Pegàs, covering 24,539 m². The intervention involves reconfiguring the current layout to provide citizens with two vehicle traffic lanes, a bus lane, and a bike lane.
Central pedestrian promenade

Between Carrers Olesa/Antilles and Carrers Tedeschini/Pegàs, the medians will be widened, and a spacious pedestrian promenade will be created with rest areas, green spaces, and two unidirectional bike lanes on the sides. Additionally, a naturalization plan for all pavements in the assigned section will be implemented, incorporating planters and rows of trees.

The works include demolishing and dismantling existing elements, earthworks for paving, and excavations for trenches and flowerbeds. Once the renovation is complete, utilities and supply lines will be restored, along with traffic lights and street furniture.

Large-scale project

Upon completion, Avinguda Meridiana will increase from nine to 15 pedestrian crossings, facilitating more foot traffic between neighbouring areas. It will also feature 230 additional trees and 7,200 m² of planters.

This is one of the most significant projects undertaken in recent years, aiming to continue the renovation started between Les Glòries park and Carrer Felipe II.

The trust placed by Barcelona City Council in Sorigué for part of this project reflects the consolidation of its Infrastructure division in the Catalan capital. Recent projects executed for the city include the renovation of tracks and platforms at Plaza Cataluña station of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FFGG), the installation of concrete slabs on the tracks at Almeda station (also FFGG), and the reurbanization of Avinguda Roma and Carrer Aragón to make way for the “superilles” (superblocks).
