The Botanical Garden of Zaragoza’s Parque Grande transforms into a climate refuge and wellness space
Sorigué’s Green Infrastructure division is overseeing the renovation, which includes new pedestrian pathways, a pond, water channels, ornamental lighting, furniture, and landscaping, while preserving the historical essence of this vital green lung in the Aragonese capital.
Moving water and medicinal plants are the central focus of the comprehensive renovation of the José Antonio Labordeta Botanical Garden in Zaragoza’s Parque Grande. The project, carried out by Sorigué’s Green Infrastructure division through its company Ambitec, covers 14,834 m² to create a more welcoming, accessible, and healthy space. The works are scheduled to continue until the summer of 2025.
The project involves creating a new network of pathways and modifying secondary routes to improve connectivity between areas and encourage visitors to stroll along paths surrounded by aromatic and medicinal plants. These plant species, along with new trees, are a vital thread for the garden, intended to serve as a wellness space for the community.
Thermal comfort
For the Zaragoza City Council, it is crucial that water is a central element of the landscaping. To achieve this, Sorigué is building a pond with a perimeter bench, incorporating aquatic plants and functioning as a reservoir to distribute irrigation water. A series of channels running through the park integrate with the proposed pathways, creating an ideal route to escape extreme heat and provide thermal comfort, highly sought after in summer.
The project includes a complete lighting overhaul with ornamental lighting, the installation of street furniture and signage, and the incorporation of restored historical stone and ceramic benches by the city’s Culture Department.
With decades of experience in providing services for urban green infrastructure, Sorigué is a leader in creating landscaped spaces, tree management, green roofs, environmental restoration, and the maintenance of green areas.
Among its recent services, Sorigué highlights the conservation of gardens and green areas in Sant Andreu de la Barca, Catalonia, the management and renovation of green spaces in Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Barcelona, and the improvement of forests and trees in the Alhambra and Generalife Monumental Complex in Granada.
