Asefma awards Sorigué for its environmental practices in asphalt mixtures

December 3, 2020

Alongside Repsol and the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio, the group received the MPA Award for best environmental practices 2020, held by the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Asphalt Mixtures.

The Sorigué business group was awarded the MPA Award for best environmental practices 2020 in relation to the manufacture, laying and transportation of asphalt mixtures, held by the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Asphalt Mixtures (Asefma).

Sorigué was recognised for the road resurfacing project using sustainable techniques carried out by the Materials division in Tarragona, within the scope of the first project of the Public Innovation Procurement programme in Catalonia, promoted by the Directorate-General for Mobility Infrastructure of the Ministry of Territory and Sustainability of the Government of Catalonia.

The work, carried out in November 2019 on a stretch of the TP-7013 road between Alforja and La Selva del Camp in Tarragona, incorporated sustainable techniques such as the manufacture and laying of bituminous mixtures at temperatures below 100ºC, resulting in a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 66% reduction in the use of raw materials, while at the same time maintaining a performance equivalent to that of a conventional mixture.
The work was divided into different sections where the lower temperature techniques of cold recycling and/or warm bituminous mixtures and/or ultra-fine warm mixtures were applied. A conventional mixture was also applied, which served as a benchmark for comparing the different techniques with each other and with the conventional process.

Alongside Sorigué, the initiatives presented by Repsol and the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio were also awarded. The judging panel, made up of members of the technical committee of the 15th ASEFMA XVNational Conference held on 2 December, assessed the projects presented on the basis of criteria of sustainability, innovation, impact on the sector and environmental improvements in the asphalt paving industry.

The “Best Environmental Practices” (MPA) Award is a sector-wide initiative that seeks to highlight R&D in relation to asphalt mixtures that result in technical, economic, sustainable and environmentally-friendly advances.
