Sorigué begins to install solar panels on the Reus Deportiu roofs

June 23, 2023

The energy efficiency and decarbonisation project developed for the sports club by the group’s renewable energy company, Ecotelia, aims to achieve 100% energy independence by 2024.

Through its renewable energy company, Ecotelia, Sorigué has started to reform the integral energy efficiency and decarbonisation project of the Reus Deportiu club in Tarragona.

The agreement was made official on 21 June in the presence of the President of the organisation, Mònica Balsells; the General Director of Building and Energy at Sorigué, José Ramon Tiemblo; the Director of Energy at Sorigué, Ignasi Clariana, and the Technical Director of Ecotelia, Jorge García.

Project implementation

The first phase of this intervention, with an investment of 1.8 million euros, will involve improvements in several areas: the removal of the asbestos roof on the sports pavilion, the adaptation of spaces to install photovoltaic panels, and the replacement of the dehumidifiers in the swimming pools and LED lighting.

In this first phase, which will take three to four months, 2,000 state-of-the-art panels will be installed. These panels will be spread over five roofs and will save around 500 tonnes of CO, which is equivalent to a forest of 20,000 trees.

During the second phase, which will involve an investment of around €600,000, gas will be completely removed from the facility and replaced by aerothermal energy. In addition, the third phase of the project will consist of the creation of an energy community that will allow the use of all the self-created and stored energy.

With these actions, Reus Deportiu has set itself the goal of achieving 100% energy independence by 2024. The project will therefore reduce the use of electricity and gas to minimise environmental and economic costs

“Reus Deportiu’s commitment is very courageous. Not only will we generate renewable energy, but we will also work on energy efficiency, i.e. consume less and save more.

Those same energy savings will be used to finance the project; this is the key”, explained Ignasi Clariana, Sorigué’s Director of Energy.

For her part, the President of Reus Deportiu, Mònica Blasells, stressed that “a new era in which we will be able to say that we have a green club is beginning, and this is one of the themes that must lead us into the future. We hope that this can be a reference project for the whole of Catalonia and Spain.”

Sorigué in energy

Sorigué specialises in delivering renewable energy generation projects, both with connection to the grid through solar farms and through self-consumption and distributed generation systems. In addition, it has extensive experience in boosting the energy efficiency of buildings and industrial facilities through value engineering, refurbishment and maintenance.

After acquiring a majority holding in Ecotelia in 2021, the company integrated its energy services in the new energy division, driven by its goal to develop business models as an energy service company (ESCO). It thus added value to its operations and expanded its offer with a comprehensive service: from energy audits and the assessment of efficiency measures to examining financing solutions for energy efficient refurbishment.

In addition, the group acquired 70% of the Portuguese renewable energy company Sunenergy in 2022, one of the largest in Portugal, which is mainly dedicated to the self-consumption sector. With this purchase, the group has continued to strengthen and expand its energy department in its commitment to contribute to decarbonisation and energy efficiency.
