Creation of new early childhood education places at nursery schools in Madrid

Construction project to renovate educational spaces and create new places in nursery schools (for children of 0-3 years old). The works involved schools in districts within the city of Madrid (Lot 6) and the northern zone of the Community of Madrid (Lot 7).

This project is part of the construction Framework Agreement for the creation of early childhood school places and the adaptation of nursery school spaces (0-3 years). It is also part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the Mechanism for Recovery and Resilience (MRR).  

In summer 2023, a campaign was launched within this Framework Agreement encompassing the following 12 schools and nurseries: Barcelona, San Roque, Los Almendros, Carmen Laforet, San Pablo, Joaquin Turina, Los Girasoles, Lorenzo Luzuriaga, Ciudad de Nejapa, Profesor Tierno Galván, El Zaleo and San Fermín.

Various renovations and adaptations were proposed according to the particular needs of each school, including works on courtyards, classrooms and common areas. 

Some of the most notable works included the following:

  • Demolition of spaces to create new classrooms.
  • Creation and adjustment of partition walls to create new spaces: Cot, changing and feeding room for classrooms 0-1; changing room and toilets for classrooms 1-2; and changing room and toilets for classrooms 2-3.
  • Remodelling of rooms for various uses.
  • Installation of entrances to provide direct access from the classrooms to the courtyards.
  • Indoor carpentry: supply and assembly of doors adapted to regulations for the prevention of injuries.
  • Installation of plumbing and sanitation system.
  • Installation of lighting and electricity system.
  • Installation of heating system.
  • Installation of fire detection and extinguishing equipment.
  • Ramps to improve accessibility to the new classrooms.
  • Creation of accessible toilets for teachers.
  • Refurbishment of courtyards, rubber play areas and sandpits.
  • Adaptation of works to current regulations.
  • Modification of equipment to ensure stability, preventing any safety risks that could be caused by movement.
