Sorigué expands the Algerri-Balaguer irrigation system

September 27, 2017

The project, awarded for the sum of 3.8 million euros, will extend over an irrigable area of nearly 800 hectares.

The Sorigué business group will carry out the works on Sector C of the Algerri-Balaguer irrigation system, the last of three segments of this project, located within the boundaries of Balaguer, Lleida.

The purpose of the project, awarded last December for the sum of 3,883,973.77 € (VAT not included) by the Infrastructure Department of the Government of Catalonia, is to place 792 hectares under irrigation in the region, through the use of a 32 km secondary network.

Irrigation system

The secondary network consists of 32,043 m of pipeline in a layout that will end at the hydrants projected for the tertiary network. Altogether 148 hydrants will be created. The minimum guaranteed capacity of each hydrant is 0.6 l/s hectare, with a minimum pressure of 25 MWC. 148 hydrants will be implemented, with a maximum of two outlets each.

The material chosen for the pipelines is high-density polyethylene for diameters less than 400 mm and fiberglass-reinforced polyester for diameters of 400 mm or greater.

The project also includes three horizontal drillings to cross the c-26 and c-12 highways.

Background of the Algerri-Balaguer irrigation system

The Algerri-Balaguer irrigation canal, which runs through the municipalities of Algerri, Albesa, Castelló de Farfanya, Torrelameu, Menàrguens and Balaguer, is one of main aspirations of the Noguera region.

The beginnings of the canal date back to the year 1960, when a water concession was requested for irrigation purposes. The concession was granted in 1968 by the Directorate General of Hydraulic Works of the Ministry of Public Works and Urban Development.

The Irrigation Users Association of the Algerri-Balaguer canal was founded on 20 January 1984, and its articles of association were approved in 1986 by the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation.

In 1992, construction began on the first segment of the Algerri-Balaguer canal.

In the years following, Sorigué participated in land reparcelling projects and in the distribution of irrigation water within the boundaries of Algerri, corresponding to sector A of the Algerri-Balaguer irrigation project.

Currently, 3,452 hectares have been converted to irrigable land, corresponding to Sector A of the Algerri-Balaguer Canal (Algerri and Albesa), together with 3,100 acres of irrigable land corresponding to Sector B (Castelló de Farfanya, Menàrguens and Torrelameu).
